Well, as only a marginal fan, I was kinda glad Italy won-- slightly weird circumstances with the head butt and all . Italian guy musta called him baldy or something . . . Still, the Italians have come close often fairly recently, so maybe had some karma correction coming their way or something. France played well when I saw the game (2nd half/overtime mainly) & maybe quieted some doubters-- for a millisecond anyway . Viva Italia!! Ed

I heard the commentor say Italy was World Champion for the 4th time... the previous were something like 1934, 1938 and 1982. So it's been a while. Not sure about European Chapionships and runners up.
Germany's last victory was 1990, as the movie "Goodbye Lenin" so brilliantly uses. Or actually, it's a movie about tearing down 'the wall' (the Berlin one, not the existing Israel wall) and it really fits, as a viewer you really are happy Germany won the title so soon after getting together.

Well, Italy gets to the final every twelve years, at least in recent history....
1970: Lost to Brasil. 1982: Won against West Germany 1994: Lost to Brasil 2006: Won against France

To tell the truth, I think that Italy this time has won with a team that was "only a lucky so so" (in Louis Armstrong's words ;D), compared to our teams in 1970 and 1994, that didn't win. On the other hand the 1982 team was really great.

On the other hand the 1982 team was really great. Well, Italy deserved it as much as anyone really. I don't think there was a team at this world Cup who were head and shoulders above everyone else. Before the tounament started we were made to believe that all that Brasil needed to do to win it was show up, but they were disappointing. And after their match against Serbia, Argentina definitely looked the business. But it was only for one match. Gaston
