I’M NOT GONNA MISS YOU (Glen Campbell; Big Machine: 2014)—Beginning in the early 1960’s folk music movement, Arkansas-born Glen Campbell became one of the biggest country and pop crossover stars since the advent of rock and roll upended the American pop music spectrum in the 1950’s. While it took until 1967 for Campbell to become a star of his own, he was nevertheless a prominent part of the Los Angeles studio music outfit known as The Wrecking Crew; and for a few months in late 1964 and early 1965, he substituted for Brian Wilson in The Beach Boys on tour. Between 1967 and 1980, Campbell enjoyed extreme popularity on either side of the pop/country fence; and although he could be deemed too middle-of-the-road for some, his guitar-playing talents were widely regarded by many of his fellow guitar players, including even Eddie Van Halen. His success trailed off during much of the 1980’s and 1990’s as he struggled with substance abuse issues, including a fairly torrid affair in the early 1980’s with country music starlet Tanya Tucker. He nevertheless was able to keep his hand in as long as he could; and in 2005, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. But in the fall of 2010, Campbell announced that he was suffering the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, which were to severely limit public appearances from that point forward. When it became evident that he would not be able to work much longer, Campbell agreed to let actor and filmmaker, not to mention long-time fan, James Keach to document him in his film Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me. Released in late 2014, the film had a short theatrical release but was nevertheless a significant success. For the film, Campbell and the film’s music composer Julian Raymond collaborated on an original song called “I’m Not Gonna Miss You”. According to Raymond, Campbell was having a hard day of having people asking him about his Alzheimer’s condition and had told Raymond, “I don’t know what everyone’s worried about. It’s not like I’m gonna miss anyone, anyway”. The song ended up on the film’s soundtrack and was Campbell’s last chart hit, peaking at #21 on the C&W singles chart, and #90 on the overall Hot 100 in October 2014. Campbell passed away on August 8, 2017 from the effects of Alzheimer’s in Nashville at the age of 81. Campbell’s daughter Ashley has since continued her father’s tradition of folk and country music.
