As of today (in no particular order)
Citizen Kane Dr. Strangelove Chinatown Lawrence of Arabia The Wanderers (this requires some explanation, as it is by no means a ‘classic’ film. However, it has such strong personal ties for me (depicting an era which was strongly part of my adolescence – and perfectly too, that I have to include it)
Honorable mention:
Annie Hall (Woody at or near his best – Marshall McLuhan scene alone worth watching) Somewhere in Time – The genres of time travel and romance have never been mixed nearly this well before or since) JFK – My favorite Oliver Stone film, and an amazing job of directing. In addition, this movie also was invaluable in influencing the government to release many previously classified documents (what were they hiding decades after the assassination?) Airplane – pure lunacy, and my favorite sight gag movie by far Time Machine (1960) - A prime example of how characters and storytelling trump empty special effects by far – the remake does not even begin to compare. Besides being a beautifully made sci-fi movie, George Pal did not neglect H.G. Wells’ social commentary (Wells used the story as a vehicle to voice his outrage at society’s shortcomings)

Quotes by robertaxel:
I agree with this one most certainly--it is probably the single greatest political black comedy ever made.
Another excellent film--especially, in my opinion, for showing how much more likely it is that there were multiple shooters in Dealey that day and, even more, for plausibly explaining why it was that the assassination was carried out in the first place.

I KNOW IT'S JUDY & CO. THE MUSIC AND THE SCENERY ETC.. BUT I NEVER THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST.. NUMBER ONE TOO..
MANY AROUND HERE HAVE RAVED ABOUT THE PLAY "WICKED".. KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT? GLAD TO GIVE A REVIEW.. IT'S ABOUT HOW THE WITCHES CAME TO BE..
( OF COURSE, MY WELSH WITCH IS NOT INCLUDED)..

You shouldn't take the ranking too seriously. They are just five movies that I think are masterpieces. Next week my list might consist of five other movies that I love just as much. But nevertheless, The Wizard Of Oz is brilliant, Kathy. Hard as they may try with their special effects and computer animation today, no other movie comes close in creating the fantasy wonderland that we got with Oz. The story, the dialogues, the music, the make-up, Dorothy, the scenery, the acting, everything about The Wizard Of Oz is absolute perfection. Gaston

My top 5
1. Annie Hall - it is watchable over and over again
2. In the Company of Men - cruelty without violence
3. One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest - so well acted
4. American Beauty - all that is cracked up to be
5. The Godather - the epitome of an epic
Wanderers is a legendary film, I can watch that over and over. Much like Valley Girl and Saturday Night Fever, such social statements of their time period.

Gosh Karen Allen, wasn't she given away in the poker game in that movie, prior to having a fling with professor Donald Sutherland in Animal House, she was a pretty understated actress.

Karen Allen was in the famous strip poker scene in The Wanderers, yep...maybe my favorite Karen Allen scene was her decking Harrison Ford in 'Raiders' .. of course, her drinking the natives under the table was cool also. Quote by robertaxel:
Yes, and I think he got away from simply doing truly great stuff like that to where he became a B-grade goremeister, in my opinion. THE THING, as gruesome as it was, was a very good movie; so too were THE FOG, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, and, of course HALLOWEEN. But I don't think Carpenter did anything truly special anymore after STARMAN.
