Actually I haven't even seen that many of his movies... and most weren't that rememberable anyway. I'll keep from voting for now...

I voted for "Schindler's List." Important film I think-- esp. by him and overall well made I think. I personally don't care that much for the 'survivor discussion' thing at the end-- but I see it makes some sense as educational tool. Others of his I like are "Raiders," "Duel" & "Sugarland Express" maybe in that order. Haven't seem most recent ones & sort ho hum or less about the rest frankly. Ed

Ed I must be the one person in the world who's never seen "Schindler's List" or "Saving Private Ryan. The one I like best of his (of the ones I've seen, not THAT many actually) is "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind." You never actually see anything until the very end but it's very suggestive. And the acting is very good in that one also. Gaston

I've seen Schindlers List and Saving Private Ryan.
Schindlers List was impressive as any WW2 movie is but not as impressive as, say, Polanski's "The Pianist". Saving Private Ryan, wel, I can't believe Tom Hanks in a 'serious' role anyway. Plus the opening reminded too much of Band of Brothers (not sure which was released first though) and the whole story was just silly.

I went with the Color Purple, for some reason this was a harder subject to tackle and it was done in a wondrous style

have yet to see any of the last five.
Saving private ryan got my vote. schindler's list, duel, empire of the sun, sugarland express, probably round out my top five.
the blockbusters, like jaws and the indiana jones movies were fun but not essential imo
absolutely hate a.i., e.t. close encounters, and 1941 was a major diasappointment.

I probably shouldn't be voting here, because I have been a largely devoted fan of his over the years. The only serious clinkers I think he has ever made that I wish he never had are 1941 and HOOK. Those two are terribly overblown in my opinion. Otherwise, I think he has made too many really good films to narrow down to just one.
If I were to narrow it down to one, however, I'd choose E.T.
But for an example of what the man could do when saddled with a budget of just over half a million dollars, please see DUEL--this is one of the most intense and terrifying films anybody has ever made (IMHO).

I've picked Schindler's List, whereas Minority Report was the worst.

As I said, I'm disgustingly biased towards Spielberg. Others I have a fondness for are two maverick named Kubrick and Peckinpah.

While I don't give a hoot if people like him or not, the man is NOT a hack. His films are filled with human dialogue, real characters, interesting relationships. I remember the first time I saw E.T. as an adult (I had seen it as a kid when it came out, but this would have been at 17 or 18 when I saw it with older eyes...hehehehe) and marvelled at how good the dialogue was.
My vote went to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, because it was a major part of my childhood wonderment. I was probably 6 or 7 in the movie theatre. I'm sure my eyes were huge throughout that film, and I remember how much that film lifted me. Truly beautiful.
I also really like E.T., Schindler, Saving Private Ryan (though hard to watch), Catch Me if You Can...
Indiana Jones films were okay, though I thought they were a bit boring at second viewing.
