nothing like the Marx Brothers for sheer lunacy.. .. Groucho for President of Fredonia (BTW - I heard a survey on National Public Radio a few years about people's feeling on the US policy toward the (mythical) kingdom of Fredonia.. people felt quite strongly about it... one reason George W was elected twice!

Tempted to vote Lloyd - but I really am curious about Keaton, as he's being used as inspiration by Johnny Depp in his great movie "Benny & Joon". I'll probably buy some dvd's of him, they're really cheap here so than I can decide.

I love all of them-- all terrific. I voted for Keaton just coz I think he's underrated or else known for cameo stuff he did later in pretty dumb films or commercials. But his early films are very creative-- & he took a lot of chances both cinematically & physically. Chaplin may've had a broader & more creative vision, but BK deserves a lot of credit for creating stuff used & reused later. I also really like the Marx Brs.-- though I find them slightly dated sometimes. WC Fields's 'attitude' I love & many of his films-- esp. the short ones-- but I've never quite been sure how much he was acting & how much just him . Ed

While I love the Marx Brothers and WC Fields, I went with Stan and Ollie. They can make me laugh so hard I cry.
I'm also a big 3 Stooges fan too. proably would rate them ahead of the brothers Marx and Bill Fields, but their comedy style is obviously vastly different.
But I truly think in their own way that Moe Howard and his brother Curly are two comic geniuses. And that Larry Fine could keep up with the two speaks well for him also.

In most polls we do it's very hard to make a choice among what are often equally impressive artists or achievements. But I think that this is the most difficult of them all (that's another fine mess I've gotten myself into ;D). All these guys are equally impressive in their own way. The Marx Brothers for their brilliant anarchic lunacy, Buster Keaton for his pioneering work and his death defying stunts, W.C Fields because he is what we would like to be when we're in a sarcastic mood, etc... Charlie Chaplin probably deserves it on overall achievement. He wrote, directed, acted, even composed. And while extremely funny, a lot of his movies were about serious subjects matters, most of them still relevant in our world of today. And he's probably the only one of the lot who could make you laugh and move you close to tears at the same time. But this poll ain't solely about who was the greatest movie maker persé, it's about who's the funniest. All these guys are able to make me end up under the table laughing. Chaplin and the Marx Brothers share the #2 spot for me, but Laurel & Hardy get my vote by the narrowest-ever of margins. I must have seen each of their movies 10 times or more by now, but it doesn't matter. I can never get enough of these guys. Gaston PS: Must be the first time that Ron and I have voted the same way in a poll.

I'm actually severely underschooled with these actors...I went with WC Fields because his work is the only stuff I've seen in this group! *bows head in shame*

I mean, you've NEVER seen Laurel & Hardy or Charlie Chaplin? O well, you can see a few Chaplin clips in the video section of this board (top of the page). Gaston

Speaking of who merely makes me laugh the most, I have to pick Laurel & Hardy.

Well, I did it. I bought the Buster Keaton box, including 4 movies and 9 shorts. So far I only saw 2 shorts but they are a lot funnier than the shorts I remember from L&H and Chaplin, specially "The Boat".

My favourite comedian is definitly Norman Wisdom. Well, I think he's from a more recent time in history than the one that this poll is about. I've seen a few of Wisdom's movies actually. Don't remember the titles though. One I remember (I think) is where he plays a milkman, the same role that Harold Lloyd and Danny Kaye played before him. Another one is a comedy about world war II where he sings a hysterical version of a Schubert song (reminds me of a colleague of mine who always sings the same song to his wife on the phone ) Gaston
