Quote by Amadeus Springstadt:
Inasmuch as I want to agree with you Gaston, I feel that the public at large has given Britney a lot of rope with respect to her below-average public behavior, and her buzz cut, her tattoos, and her partying around with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan show to me that she's willing to use that rope and hang herself with it. There is a limit to public sympathy, and I don't have any whatsoever for her.

People like Janis Joplin, Dusty Springfield, Elvis Presley and many others had similar and/or other ways of self-destructive behaviour. Some of that outrageous behavior is also like a crying out for help, or the drug and booze an escape from a reality they can't live with. Difference is that in the case of Janis, Dusty and Elvis we found it easier to forgive and feel sympathy because we respected them more as artists. Gaston

So Erik you hate Britney for partying too much with the wrong friends and having tattoos? Is that what you're saying?

What I am saying is that she should take responsibility for herself, not go in and out of rehab centers every twenty-four hours, not put her kid on her lap when she's driving, and take a break from the party-hard life she has led. Just take charge. Is that asking too much--of anybody?

I still like "Hit Me Baby One More Time." I heard that on the radio the morning after my first sexual experience. We were in his pickup and he turned it up...I had never heard it before and he loved it. I doubt that will ever wear off.... And yes, you all DID need to know that. And of course, no, it has nothing to do with her current situation, not really....

It is very difficult, if not impossible to separate songs from the circumstances we associate with them... With regard to your example, Andrew, the Seasons' 'December 1963' comes to mind for me :}

On the subject of songs being connected with certain circumstances, one that sticks out in my mind is Elvis' "Way Down." It is still one of his best latter-day rockers--but unfortunately, the week the song hit its peak of #18 on the pop chart, he died. The same with John Lennon's "Just Like Starting Over", as well.
