SHOULD BE BANNED ....... CRUELTY TO DUMB ANIMALS ..... I mean we would allow it to Britney Spears, who is far less intelligent, but might enjoy being ridden, so why to a Horse? Terry is on the warpath. Gaston

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday after complications from his gruesome breakdown at last year's Preakness, ending an eight-month ordeal that prompted an outpouring of support across the country. "We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain," co-owner Roy Jackson said. "It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time." A series of ailments, including laminitis in the left rear hoof and a recent abscess in the right rear hoof, proved too much for the gallant colt. Long May You Run ~

Happy birthday! Fans throw party for Barbaro Horse lovers from Philly to South Africa travel for event to pay tribute. April 29, 2007 STANTON, Del. - No cake, no oats. Only memories, tears, and stories of Barbaro’s spirit were shared at this birthday party. Fans traveled from around the world to pay tribute and honor Barbaro at Delaware Park on Sunday on what would have been the Kentucky Derby winner’s fourth birthday. Fans — some wearing Barbaro shirts with a halo around the “B” — dabbed tears while Barbaro’s owners spoke or while they personally shared their stories with them. Roy and Gretchen Jackson were mobbed like rock stars, signing autographs, posing for pictures, but mostly just listening to the fans who wanted a minute to tell their own stories. Someone put an “FOB” hat on Roy Jackson’s head, signed by so many of Barbaro’s devoted followers. The FOBs have raised about $250,000 and personally rescued nearly 600 horses, started fund drives for laminitis research and other equine diseases, and pressured lawmakers to pass anti-slaughter bills. On Saturday night, another $15,000 was raised at an auction fundraiser. “Barbaro’s done more good after his death,” said Jo Deibel, who has had some of the horses rescued from killer pens moved to her horse haven. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBARO.. RIP

Half of my family breeds thoroughbreds. Horse Racing is in my blood. I was lucky enough to see Secretariat's phenomenal stretch run in the Belmont. For my money, one of the wonders of the world. Also saw Affirmed & Alydar's Belmont run. These were amazing horses. My first job was as a 12-year-old excercise rider. I loved the work, hated the hours and the pay wasn't much. Yet being on the back of a thoroughbred at sunrise is truly a wonderous experience. 91215225251621 Secretariat's 31 lengths winning stretch run at the Belmont

Wow-- those must have been amazing experiences-- lucky you!!! I rode a bit for a few years (not race horses-- American Saddlebreds & some trail riding & hunters a time or two) & I def. miss it-- not the time, place or money . I enjoyed going to races from time to time too-- all my experiences on West Coast (mainly Santa Anita when I lived in LA). But I enjoy horses & riding, & miss it. Ed

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced today that a special blog page dedicated to Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches is now up at the company's Web site, www.ntra.com. The popular 3-year-old filly gained national acclaim when she followed up her win in the Kentucky Oaks with a victory in the June 9 Belmont Stakes, becoming the first filly in 102 years to capture the final jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown. The blog page will feature twice-weekly updates from the Todd Pletcher stable on the latest doings of Rags to Riches. Also on the site will be a Rags to Riches photo gallery, video of her 2007 stakes races, biographical information on the filly and her trainer Todd Pletcher, and a special feature through which fans will be able to ask Team Pletcher questions about Rags to Riches. The blog page will continue through the Breeders' Cup World Championships. "Rags to Riches was already a brilliant filly prior to the Belmont Stakes, but her Belmont win over her male contemporaries truly captured the imagination of the American public and took her popularity to a whole new level," said Keith Chamblin, senior vice president of communications and industry relations for the NTRA. "We are delighted to offer fans this vehicle for staying in touch with racing's newest superstar, and we thank Todd Pletcher and his staff for their gracious cooperation on this project."
