Gotta go with Henin. When she's healthy, which is the case at the moment, she's currently the best player in the world. The absence of Clijsters, arguably the best hard court player right now, improves Justine's chances also.
Sharapova and Mauresmo (if she can hold it together mentally) could be Henin's main rivals. I consider Ana Ivanovic to be the dark horse in the draw, very dangerous player if she gets going.
It's probably too soon in Serena's comeback for her to challenge for the title, although you can't count her out completely. But there are about a dozen players here who have a small but realistic change of winning if certain things happen and the draw opens up for them.

A bit of a wild guess, maybe more than a bit but I think it's about time Schnyder won something big... By the way, I don't trust the draw. What does the WTA have against poor little Krajiceck? In the first round she has to face Sharapova. How is she going to get the wta-points she deserves with such draws?

Woman's tournament is harder to handicap I think. I voted narrowly for Henin, 'coz I think she's healthy enough, & certainly mentally tough enough to deal with New York crowds, which could get to Mauresmo. I was tempted to pick Sharapova too, but I'm not completely sure of her health (she had an injury) despite her assurances, & still a bit one dimensional game. Davenport if well too but I don't think she's quite fit/match tough enough though experience could carry her awhile. Ivonovic yeah could def. contend-- won in Canada. Also I like Vaidosova-- very good young player with nothing to lose & right hard court game. I'd sentimentally like Hingis to win, but don't see it. She still hasn't found a way really against power players. Given walking wounded nature of esp. womens' tennis now, fittest for the tournament will probably win. Ed

She is very skilful, more so than many of the big names in my opinion, but today power is everything (or at least 80%). I think that if tomorrow we would get rid of the snowshoe sized racquets with their huge sweetspot (which compensates for poor technique and makes it much easier to hit a hard shot) Hingis, Henin and Schnyder would be the main players. I was glad to see Maria win-- & not just for the sexy, yet elegant outfit . I thought a very consistent and well thought out plan of playing Henin, who never seemed quite with it but still a fine player (yeah I know some malarky about coaching from MS's 'gallery'--but Henin pulls stuff too at times IMO). I suppose we have to see how she handles even more notoriety now, but I wish her well. Ed
