this is music and sports related.. i think this particular instrument is underated
Steve Buttleman has his long, silver Herald Trumpet nearby. It is played like a regular trumpet, but the tubing is rearranged and stretched out. He generally plays this trumpet, but Churchill Downs also has a custom-made Herald Bugle that has been passed down through the years.
There's even a Web site for horse track buglers. Buttleman is at the top of The All-Star Buglers (www.allstarbuglers.net). Here, you'll also find Jay Cohen from Santa Anita Park, Sam Grossman of Aqueduct and Frank Hughes of Monmouth Park in New Jersey where the 2007 Breeder's Cup will take place.
"People do variations on 'Call to the Post,' " he says. "Some play it slower or articulate it differently. The original bugle call has a 16th-note triplet at the beginning. I usually slow those down because it sounds rushed, especially when it's going over the public address system. It travels so far, it sounds garbled."
Besides the Derby and Breeder's Cup, Buttleman performs at every live race at Churchill Downs. That's nine or 10 races a day, five days a week. "When we're open it's full time," he says. "When we're closed, there's a void." Churchill Downs is open Wednesday through Sunday from the last weekend in April to the weekend after the Fourth of July and again from Oct. 28 to the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That's a lot of bugle playing.
