Indeed. Well I don't know. Germany is always good at sport but the Olympics has so many different medals, hard to keep up what sports are olympic or not. By the way, if a soccer teams wins gold, does that count for 11 or 1?

Actua;y I'm not much into the Summer games. I like the winter games much more. For speed skating of course but there's also other sports I will watch then. But the summer games very little of interest to me.

I've found it very difficult to warm up to these Games so far...and just today, they have been marred by the violent stabbing death of an in-law of the U.S. men's volleyball coach at the hands of a Chinese maniac who then proceeded to commit suicide.
Anyway. if I were to take an educated guess as to which country would take the most overall medals, it would probably be the United States. But I say this not out of nationalism or chauvanism, because I'm also very interested in what many other nations' athletes can accomplish in Beijing.

But the summer games very little of interest to me. I like track & field - and (as always) tennis of course. But I can get into most sports once I start watching. Holland will do well as always - so I think that your interest will increase when it gets going. BTW - the opening ceremony was fab. Most impressive I've ever seen. Maybe the most entertaining waste of money ever. ;D Gaston

Four years ago they already had more than Russia and now it's in China itself - definitely an advantage, both in terms of support and umpiring (and judging in sports like gymnastics and diving). But not meaning to take anything away from them - they are great in many sports as it is. Gaston

Quote by jhar26:
Well, they definitely had the edge on U.S. in the women's gymnastics at least--they got the Gold. And they earned it, on their home turf.

There're still a few days to go Gaston. Maybe Belgium will come through someplace. . . !! US is doing better than I thought in some things (if worse so far in track & boxing I guess). They even managed a few medals in equestrian & men's gymnastics. Those German and Dutch riders & horses are great though, well deserving. . . Ed

Congrats, Ben. We've got a girl highjumper who's good enough to challenge for a medal, but she will probably jump half a meter below her best on this occasion. Gaston Israel got a bronze yesterday! Hopefully, she'll come through. Actually, Israel's team has broken a bunch of Israeli records this Olympics, but that still falls short of qualifying in most events. Ben Congrats, Ben. Ben Well, if they break Israeli records it means that they are performing at their best. You can't ask for anything more than that. The problem with the Belgian team is that most of them are performing below their best - and some of them far below their best. Gaston

Belgium still has a chance at bronze at soccer - where Holland would win gold, so was promised. Not a chance.
But Holland is doing better than I expected in sports I never knew 'we' were good at (like male open water swimming and female water polo). The horses, well that's something Holland and Germany have always ruled in as long as I remember.

The horses, well that's something Holland and Germany have always ruled in as long as I remember. I'm a fan of the team from the Netherlands, actually. I don't watch the Olympics on Belgian television - I watch Dutch television instead, except for athletics. The BBC is in a class of it's own when it comes to coverage of track & field. As for Belgium having a chance for the bronze in soccer - maybe, but it's against Brasil. Besides, soccer is maybe the sport that matters the least of them all at the olympics. The soccer establishment looks upon the Olympics as a pain in the you know what and as a result nobody plays with what would be anywhere their best team.

Not entirely true - I thin kit's a good thing about the rule that the teams should be <23 of age (or is it 21?) with max. 3 exceptions. Maybe it could be more fun if there were also these kind of rules for Tennis and Basketball and other sports people make millions in. But you are right that a lot of coaches are glad when their players are out of the tournament and return to the club. But the same happens at the Africa cup or at other kinds of national teams playing. I don't watch much but if I do I choose a channel that shows something that interests me. If Holland has Judo and Eurosport has female beach volleyball I watch Eurosport

Yes, I think Israel's done very well overall even if only one bronze to show for it. Came very close a few times. I haven't really been watching, just reading the occassional article about it. Sounds like Belgium needs a new coach. Ben Hopefully, she'll come through. Belgium still has a chance at bronze at soccer. Brasil: 3 Belgium: 0 ....But brace yourself and be prepared for a shock: Our girls have won the silver in the 4x100 m relay.
