... and I'm happy about it. Away with the right wing conservatives! In with the left wing socialists!

What does this mean for the people of Holland?

Well, it varies. The cabinet has made a lot of changes in all kind of social security, mostly changes that made the poor get less and the rich get more, as it's supposed to be of course The question now is what will happen. Balkenende (the Potter lookalike) will resign tomorrow, and then he's got a few options: continue without a majority in the parliament, hoping his plans for the future will be supported by varying parties. Or try to create a new coalition, which seems impossible and useless as new elections were planned for next March. Or he can change the date for the new election to somewhere this year, maybe October or November. The last option seems most wise except in that case the parliament is not allowed to make radical decisions until the new election. Holland really became a mess the past 5 or 6 years...

Well, it's going to be a minoruty cabinet after all. Elections are in November. Unfortunatelly the new cabinet will still make a financial plan for the entire next year...

Let's hope your fellow-citizens change the majority in the next election.

Well one thing to be jealous of, in my opinion, is the multiple party option. Instead of voting one of 2 (lesser of the evils?) at election we can vote for about 20 or 30 parties, of course a lot of them never stand a chance, but still 6-8 parties usually have 1 or more seats in out parliament (which has 150 seats in total).
What you don't have to be jealous of is the way this country is reigned in the past 4 years. Sure, the US isn't that pleasant either but our prime-minister does everything to become just like the US and be best friends. Poor Peter Jan... will Bush even know his name without help?
Anyway. It started going terribly wrong when in 2001 Pim Fortuin created a new party. He created a feeling that the 8 years before (where there were 2 cabinets of the same coalition) were terrible and that something had to be done. He got a huge number of followers by just stating problems, not giving solutions, no, just stating them. This made him #1 in the town-counsil in Rotterdam and probably would have made him #1 in the country too if he hadn't been killed in 2002, just a few days before the election. Well, the seed was planted and ever since there's a lot of polarization in Holland... also causing 3 different cabinet's in 4 years... not good.

He got a huge number of followers by just stating problems, not giving solutions, no, just stating them. In a way he was a bit like Ross Perot. Both charismatic, although in very different ways. Both are/were very good in debates and right wing, although Fortuin was probably alot more open minded on moral issues than Perot. And of course, considering their respecitive personalities, neither man would have stood a chance in the other man's country. Gaston

Charismatic but deceitful, some plans he had were very bad for the poor and unemployed but they still adored him for speaking of the immigrant (muslim) problem. As for his personal preferences, they never bothered me. It's funny though that during his funeral (in Italy! the 'saviour' of Holland was burried in Italy!) some neo-nazis showed up to pay respect but got very upset when Fortuin's homosexual love life and visits to 'dark rooms' were mentioned... conflicted with their ideas

Well, it's nice to know every country (and not just the USA) seems to have criminals in power. One would think people everywhere would be smarter than we are to send these sad sacks into office.
