I am curious to hear if anyone has any thoughts on Barack Obama. As I mentioned on another thread he does nothing for me, but I must admit he does seem to be quite popular.
I have a friend to believes that he is the answer to most of America's problems. I just don't see it myself.

I have read a column which states that, based on his book, he may not be a friend to gay citizens. Not having read the book, I can't say. Has anyone read it?

For me i think the jury is still out.
I do believe that he is a good man and a man of faith. And as opposed to those in the Relgious Right, he tends to focus his faith on issues that are more in line with the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth (concern for the poor, social justice, etc). He believes that Democrats and Progressives need to add their beliefs to the debate on moral issues and stop giving the Falwells and Dobson's the moral high ground.
I'm not so sure his views on reproductive choice will endear him to the Right to Lifers, but I'm not sure they will guarantee him support with the pro choice movement either.
While it's nice that the Democratic party has become the 'big tent" that embraces all the individual causes, I think it has lost its focus on the issues that mean the most to the majority of Americans, those being economic security and opportunity for all Americans regardless of social position, affordable and safe health care for all, equal education for all and the opportunity for higher learning for all who desire it, social justice and of course a peaceful and secure world for our children to grow up in.
Will his candidacy appeal to every voter/interest group in the party, probably not, but I think the bigger question is will it appeal to the majority of Americans.
And that remains to be seen.

I don't know enough about him to judge really. I haven't been as psyched as some by him, though I think he is articulate from what I've seen. I ahven't read his book-- normally I'm suspicious of politician's books-- unless they're NOT writing about themselves. But I'm not sure infusing the 'belief' ideas will make him more than a Jimmy Carterish type-- maybe appealing to the party but like Ron, I'm not sure able to sway sufficient independents. But that's today-- more telling will be the stress of the campaign once it really develops. I think for now he's most likely to be considered a VP candidate. Ed

I think Barack Obama would make a fine president, but I also think he will do himself more good in the long run by remaining in the Senate and being a strong advocate for the things that Democrats have traditionally run strong upon. More exposure, and getting out there with the traditional Democratic base and the independent vote, will do him a world of good (IMHO).

To me he is a bit too slick and uses all the "right" words and phrases to get the crowds going. But to me they are just words. He voted for the bankruptcy bill and he should have known better had he cared for the working man. I wouldn't be surprised if much of his contributions came from third party Republicans trying to derail Hillary's campaign as they know Obama could never win in this redneck country. Personally, I prefer Edwards for the Presidency at the moment.
