As weird as it must seem, I went with Gerald Ford--not because he was in office for a shorter time than the others (not even 2 1/2 years!), but because he did the best he could in the job with the raw deal handed to him by Nixon.

I considered Ford, but he pardonned Nixon for Watergate, proving once again that the law is more equal for some people than for others. So I went with Ronnie. I don't like him much, but at least he had charisma and the ability to make Americans feel good about themselves. How non-Americans felt about him is another matter altogether. And let's not forget that he (or his better half) came up with the solution to the drugs problem - just say no.

Quote by jhar26 re. Gerald Ford:
True, and it probably cost Ford a legitimate first term in office. But in retrospect, to have not pardoned Nixon and put him through a criminal trial in which the stress and strain would have been enough to kill him would not have looked too good, either for Ford or the country (IMHO).

Well, you do something against the law, Erik. Even if it's trivial compared to the crimes of Nixon - I'm sure that nobody will care one bit about your stress and strain. Putting Nixon through a trial might not have looked good at the time, but later on people would have respected it IMO. After all, it's not like he was caught smoking a joint or getting a blow job from his secretary - these were serious crimes.

I voted for Nixon but not really sure why, before my time (interest). But if the one negative thing about him is Watergate he must not have been so bad considering the others (though I don't know Ford at all really).

If watergate had been the only bad thing about him I would have voted for Bush Jr instead. He escalated the war in Vietnam, bombed Cambodia, but denied doing so for as long as he could. He even considered bombing the dykes in Vietnam which would have caused a massive loss of life. All to suit his personal ego because "I don't want to be the first president to lose a war." He used the FBI to discredit all political opposition, etc. He was a scumbag - seeing his face alone is enough to make my stomach turn.

I agree with Erik.. Ford was probably a well meaning person, and given the dreadful record of most recent Republican presidents doing the least damage is as good as it gets!

I voted for Nixon here as he was the first president I ever campaigned for (I was too young to vote, so Ford was the first presidential candidate I actually voted for and I was a Ford delegate to our state GOP convention).
Reagan was the reason I changed political parties in 1982 (I supported independent John B. Anderson in the 1980 election).
Bush the smarter and Bush the lesser did nothing for me.

I might add that if the John McCain that ran in 2000 was the same John McCain that was running today, I might be tempted to vote for him. Yuck. I had to vote in that. I must shower now.
I picked Ford, because he was in office for the shortest amount of time.
Nixon, Reagan, and Bush Jr. have done so much irreparable damage to the world that I get dizzy just thinking about it.
