Once again, Mother Nature has pulled out one of her many practical jokes for Southern California so close to Halloween.
Since yesterday, we have been buffeted by extremely high winds of close to hurricane force. Thousands of people here in the Los Angeles area have had their electricity knocked out by downed power lines and fallen trees; and palm fronds and other debris are strewn all over the place. It's been due to a low pressure area over Nevada combined with a High centered off the coastline; the tight pressure gradient between the two is what is creating these winds. Even worse, not only did the winds cause a huge dust storm that obscured the San Gabriel Mountains late in the afternoon yesterday, there was also ash in that dust being raised from the huge area of forest scorched by the Station Fire in September.
Even as I write this, at mid-morning, the winds are blowing out of the northwest at close to 45 miles per hour, and causing everything not tied down or under a shelter to be blown all over. This is about as bad as I've seen it in a while here.
