They surely know how to make a mess of things, I must say. That start just now with the whistle that wasn't heard was just embarrassing.

Yes, I think it was more a sound from the speakers that Nagashima mistook for the referee's whistle. Not sure though, but it wasn't a false start. They'll reskate before the break as last pair. Unfortunately Lobkov already skated 300m full speed.

Geez. Poor Groothuis.

4th place sucks. Hedrick 3rd, that is a surprise and shows Groothuis should have made the podium. However, he's been ill 2 weeks and recovered 1 week before this day. He just wasn't fit enough today.
He'll also skate the 1500 but given the difficult circumstances I think Tuitert will do better there, and also Kramer will be there...

You definitely know a lot about speedskating, Arjan. Tomorrow it's the women's 1.00m, right? Anyway - goodnight. I'm gonna try to get a few hours of sleep before work. I have a day off from work on Friday, so tomorrow night won't be a problem.

Almost everyone else found it diffcult to take those tight corners, but she always managed to follow the ideal line from start to finish.

I STILL can't find a working webstream No TV in the house, NBC doesn't allow any non-US based folks to stream and I can't get Eurosport to work. Anything else? Ben Earlier, starts at 10pm (first heat) and if all goes well the 2nd heat ends around 0.30-1.00. I'll watch this live

Check out "other sports" on "fromsport." I don't think they cover everything, but some events are on there. www.fromsport.com/And whenever I want to see a tennis match that's not on television I usually go to "livescorehunter" who often have very good streams. I don't know if they cover any of the Olympic events. www.livescorehunter.com/Bet365 is said to have the best streams of all, and they always work. You need to register though, but it's free and you don't have to bet if you don't want to. But I haven't registered myself because I feel uncomfortable giving them my address and credit card info, even though some people who I know and are 'members' there say that they never have any problems. www.bet365.com/home/

For today I don't expect much from the US though Richardson was good at the 500. But it will be mainly Canadians, Friesinger, Angermuller, the Dutch (mainly Boer en van Riessen but Gerritsen en Wüst are not bad either) and maybe another Asian surprise.

Given the fact that her shin still hadn't completely healed, the fact that she made it down in one piece seemed to be its own reward. To see those four crashes (one just yards out of the start, and the other three over that final huge bump) was horrific.
Quote by arjan:
Speed skating definitely is a lot of fun to watch for me, regardless of the nationality of the participants. Like I said, I prefer the long track variety as opposed to short track, the latter of which sometimes resembles a typical freeway pile-up here in L.A.

Thanks. Just tried fromsport and it said they were offline. Not sure what their hours are. No intention to join a betting place as I don't on general principle.I have to check out the livescore site but no time left to watch now. Ben Check out "other sports" on "fromsport." Yes, a smile is so much nicer than tears. Really happy about van Riessen too. And Boer will be very disappointed as #6, she just went so fast she couldn't keep it. Just like a lot of others too, that last round is so difficult.
So, silver and bronze. Tomorrow is a day off and Saterday the 1500m men, that can be 1, 2 or 3 medals for Holland but 0 is possible too of course.

Yes, a rather horrific-looking accident. But LV is still in on a few more events; and as we've seen in every event in these Olympics, anything can happen...and usually does.

I think that the downhill was the most important event for LV. She'll probably pick up some more medals in days to come.

Certainly I don't think she's done yet at these Olympics, and you can say the same thing for her fellow competitors. But to see the kinds of accidents on that downhill track, especially on that huge bump where it was impossible not to get a lot of air under one's skis, makes one realize the risks they are willing to take to live up to the Olympic creed of "faster, higher, stronger."

The downhill is a dangerous event. There are always a few accidents. Skiing is definitely one of the most spectacular sports to watch though and those atletes have tremendous skills.
BTW - I dislike shorttrack skating. It looks more like a circus attraction than a legitimate sport to me. Best to follow 50m behind the pack, wait till they fall over and ride home to an easy victory. ;D

Of course, short track will never work like that, though I admit it sometimes looks like a typical day on the freeway in Los Angeles (LOL). Me, I prefer the longtrack version; it's like the running events for the winter set.
I'm also going to try and catch the cross-country ski races as well. Though they seem tedious to a lot of people, for it's rather interesting to see these athletes climb and ski on the same course for a sustained period of time. If you think a marathon on an open road is tiring, well, this one's even more so (IMHO).

Today and tomorrow in speedskating the distance that is most loved - and feared - the 1500m. What makes this distance so special? First, it's by default the distance where the sprinters and all rounders meet each other. Sprinters skate their championship over 500 and 1000m, allrounders (men) 500, 1500, 5000 and 10000m and women 500, 1500, 3000 and 5000m. A sprinter that can add something to their longest distance and a long distance specialist that can open fast meet here, and then there's the specialists. Second, because of this it's a distance where you can have different approaches. Sprinters will open fast and hope not to collapse too much in the end, where the allrounders open slow and hope to win all they lost back in the final laps. So, tonight it's the men. Wo will compete and who are favourites? - Kramer (nld): long distance specialist but also capable of skating a great 1500 - Groothuis (nld): sprinter capable of skating an extra round - Kuipers, Tuitert (nld): both considered specialists - Davis, Hedrick (usa): for both this is their favourite distance, even more for Hedrick than Davis, but both really dangerous candidates. - Lalenkov (rus), Morrison (can): both specialists - Fabris (ita), , Bøkko (nor): allrounders with a preference for this distance On this ice it seems the allrounders have the better chance; the ice is hard so sprinters are likely to crash earlier. Allrounders/long distance specialists can go on longer so it's likely they will easy win back their lost time. But you never know what will happen with so many favourites... it wil be great. For Gaston: it starts 1.15am! Fortunately tomorrow is Sunday

Startlist for tonight:
1. Lebedev,Rus 2. Friberg,Swe - Ha,Zko 3. Schwarz,Ger - v.d. Horst,Nor 4. Briand,Fra - Lee,Kor 5. Parrott,Can - Sun,Chi 6. Gao,Chi - Doi,Jap 7. Röjler,Swe - Rukke,Nor 8. Jesin,Rus - Kramer, Nld 9. Hansen,Us - Eriksson,Swe 10. Sugimori,Jap - Kuipers, Nld 11. Brodka,Pol - Koezin,Kaz 12. Niedzwiedzki,Pol - Larsen,Nor 13. Lalenkov,Rus - Anesi,Ita 14. Marsicano,Us - Mo,Kor 15. Fabris,Ita - Giroux,Can 16. Skobrev,Rus - Morrison,Can 17. Bøkko,Nor - Tuitert, Nld 18. Groothuis,Nld - Hedrick,Us 19. Davis,Us - Makowsky,Can
Again, Kramer has to set a time before the other favourites skate. Davis knows exactly what he has to do. That can be an advantage. Hedrick has a good draw against Groothuis, given his style to fight the co-skater more than the time. Groothuis will no doubt start faster so is a good aiming point for Hedrick.
