In case any of you haven't seen it yet, we here in L.A. were awakened this morning by a very sharp earthquake. It struck at 4:04 AM and was centered near Pico Rivera, which is 11 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles, and was measured by the seismologists at CalTech here in Pasadena at a magnitude 4.4 on the Richter Scale.
Where I live, it felt like a sharp jolt, and then a rumbling that lasted 7.5 seconds, before it stopped. Nothing flew off any of the shelves at home, but my cat was terrified for about an hour after the quake. Watching the news on TV right after the quake, the most severe damage was a buckling of the pavement of the southbound side of Interstate 5 near Downey, not far from the quake's epicenter; the two right lanes of the freeway had to be (and I think still are, as of this moment), shut down for CalTrans to inspect the damage.
We are well and safe where I am, but it is another reminder, not only of the fact that this is earthquake territory, but that we are not nearly as in charge of things as we sometimes like to claim.

Glad that you're allright and that there were no victims, Erik. Nature has had quite a few surprises in store for people lately.

Certainly we are not suffering like the people in Chile or Haiti have been suffering--not yet, anyway. But you'll notice how frightened we are by an act of Nature that we know is endemic to how we live here in California. We don't handle natural disasters very well, and I think the whole world knows that.

Glad you're okay-- that's a lot of serious damage for a relatively 'small' quake. With all the quake action lately, I do have some extra worry about California lately. . . SF area still hasn't completely recovered or cleaned up from the '89 one (the Bay Bridge from SF to Oakland still has major problems stemming from that for example). Hope your cat is better-- take extra care of him!
