Who says we don't have any real weather here in SoCal? We have been buffeted since 8 PM last night by perhaps the strongest windstorm event to hit us since 1997, with cold Santa Ana winds clocked at average speeds of 50-75 miles per hour, and gusts reaching Category 2 Hurricane strength (100 m.p.h.) in some isolated areas. Power lines have been arcing and falling; transformers have exploded; trees have been blown down (including a jacaranda in my own backyard, which thankfully avoided hitting the house); and anything not nailed down or inside a shelter is being blown around--tons of sand, debris, and dust. Those Santa Anas are really treacherous. Hang on, Eric!! I'm glad your house escaped damage. We occasionally get high winds too up here near SF, but not usually those big gusts.

These winds were unbelievably ferocious; and the damage they caused was pretty horrific. Temple City, which is just to the southeast of where I live, is mostly without power even at this very moment; and they say that it may be up to a week before power is restored to all residents. Hundreds of trees were either damaged or uprooted altogether in Pasadena and Altadena, including two large trees strung with lights along the historic Christmas Tree Lane.
Fortunately, given the Santa Anas' reputation for fueling wildfires, the only blaze that we've had so far was a minor two-acre brushfire that burned near Occidental College in Eagle Rock, and that was put out rather quickly by the L.A. Fire Department right in the middle of the storm itself. This looks to be a windstorm for the record books, certainly for this century so far at least.
