'12 Years a Slave' and 'Gravity' Lead 2014 Oscar Winners



The 86th Academy Awards have been handed out, and they were basically as we expected: "Gravity" won the most awards with a whopping 7 (director, editing, cinematography, visual effects, original score, sound mixing and sound editing), but not the biggest prize. That went to Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave," which won best picture along with best supporting actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and best adapted screenplay (John Ridley).

Alongside Nyong'o, acting winners included "Dallas Buyers Club" duo Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, and "Blue Jasmine" star Cate Blanchett -- all of which most expected to be the case. "Frozen," "Twenty Feet From Stardom" and "The Great Beauty," meanwhile, won best animated feature, documentary feature and foreign language film, respectively -- which again, represented no surprises. Though notably, David O. Russell's "American Hustle" went 0-for-10, which wasn't entirely expected.

Well, you can't say it wasn't spread out all over. I am kind of shocked by the fact that GRAVITY, which is essentially a science fiction film, won as many awards as it did, even if most of them were in the technical categories.

Well, I don't see why it always have to be dramas or movies with a socio-political message that win Oscars. The best movie is the best movie, no matter if it's a drama, a comedy or a science fiction movie. But the best movie doesn't really exist to begin with, so... Also, I can't take it seriously when a movie wins a number of Oscars. There's no way that (for the sake of argument) 'the best' actor, actress, director and so on all worked on the same movie. It's entirely possible that, say, the best actress worked in a mediocre movie that would have been a lousy one without her. Noot that the winners are undeserving, but the Oscars, like the grammys or any such shows are merely about showbizz and to give Hollywood the opportunity to promote product. And it's a fashion show where celebs get the chance to pat each other on the back. I don't deny that it's good entertainment, but trophees are something you win in sports. When they are given to you because they think you're a nice guy/girl or because 'your team' did a good job campaigning it becomes kinda meaningless imo.

Glad to see Matthew McConaughey gets his award. This was the most impressive role I saw this year, and continues Matthew's reinvention from a shirtless boy toy to a widely respected and serious artist. I cannot think of another actor offhand who turned his career around so quickly and thoroughly...

Does anyone here doubt that if he were around in the 1860s, that fat f**k would be on his front plantation porch sucking a mint julep and watching his slaves??

I haven't seen 12 Years, so can't comment on RL's catty remarks. Only ones nominated I saw were Gravity, Nebraska and Blue Jasmine. I liked Nebraska the most. But maybe too slice of life/small scale for Oscar. The others I'd rate as 'mildly entertaining.' Effects on Gravity were interesting: but I think I'd find a documentary about how it was filmed more interesting than film itself. Sort of predictable really. BJ was effective at times, rather dull at others, with variable writing IMO: sort of norm now IMO for later Woody films.  But Blanchett's character does remind me of a friend of my wife's, who after bitter divorce faced somewhat similar circumstances and also had a less dramatic but sad breakdown. I did like ok the Foreign film winner, The Great Beauty: even if 'Fellini-light,' impressive photography of Rome, & ok satire of present day Italy and Rome. & 'louche if smart' hero is a mainly interesting character, 'Eurointellectual' type well played IMO. I didn't see any of the other foreign films nominated.

Truth is, I just don't like most recent films, except for a few indies here and there mostly. & the odd animated one .

I need to see this, though apparently I'm supposed to hate and despise Woody Allen and all of his movies now. I do recall feeling complete horror and anguish at the end of Crimes and Misdemeanors. I like it when Woody taps into misery.

I glanced at a Red Box yesterday. Of the grammy movies, I saw that they had Gravity, Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyer's Club, and Frozen. I also noticed they had Kill Your Darlings, something that I have been wanting to see.
