www.esquire.com/blogs/culture/the-big-lebowski-library-of-congressEvery year, the library picks 25 films that are considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically” significant; each film must be at least 10 years old to be considered. The public can nominate any title, and then library officials narrow it down, so it looks like enough Dudeists made their voices heard this year. There are now 650 preserved films in the Library of Congress. "The National Film Registry showcases the extraordinary diversity of America’s film heritage and the disparate strands making it so vibrant," Librarian of Congress James. H. Billington said in a press release. "By preserving these films, we protect a crucial element of American creativity, culture, and history." In a list that features early silent films and depressing documentaries, The Big Lebowski certainly does lend some diversity. Bert Williams Lime Kiln Club Field Day (1913) Shoes (1916) Unmasked (1917) The Dragon Painter (1919) The Power and the Glory (1933) State Fair (1933) Ruggles of Red Gap (1935) Down Argentine Way (1940) The Gang’s All Here (1943) V-E +1 (1945) The Way of Peace (1947) House of Wax (1953) Rio Bravo (1959) Felicia (1965) Rosemary’s Baby (1968) Little Big Man (1970) Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) Please Don’t Bury Me Alive! (1976) Moon Breath Beat (1980) Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) Luxo Jr. (1986) Saving Private Ryan (1998) The Big Lebowski (1998) Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport (2000) 13 Lakes (2004)

Yes, this may be the very first time when you'd have to question the board's choice. It's really just a Brat Pack film, and from a time when I was in my teens--a time that I wish had been better for me, and one that I would rather forget.
