All joking aside - the biggest surprise in a positive way was Lady GaGa doing a Sound of Music medley. Last year when I did some youtubing on current "queens of pop" Beyonce was the only one who really surprised me in a "she's better than I expected" kind of way. Rihanna - ok, not bad. The others didn't impress me at all, at least not in a musical sense although most had the theatre part covered pretty well. But I have to reconsider my opinion on Lady GaGa - she's got "it." Talented lady and she can sing. There - I've said it.

It definitely was a shock... and a good one (no meat dress or scenes of her coming to the awards in a giant egg). One thing, though: Julie Andrews never wore tattoos...now or even fifty years ago.
The one award I had predicted right was in the Visual Effects category--it was given to INTERSTELLAR, which, like last years VFX winner GRAVITY, owes a debt to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (which won in 1968).

She's a bit crazy, so we gotta give her something. Just as long as she doesn't walk around with a thelephone on her head.

Lady Gaga does have some talent I agree. I think she has evolved a bit from just being an even more outrageous Madonna-clone. She can play, writes most of her own stuff and does some arranging I believe, AND researches/designs a lot of her outfits carefully it seems. I'm not crazy bout her voice really, and some of the antics. But if she ever stops being a caricature/joking around (and channeling a drag queen's idea of Ethel Merman/Barbra Streisand's love child at times, which is how I hear the project w. Tony Bennett ), she could show a way to some solid musical contribution. She has said she likes jazz and Broadway stuff too-- somewhat 'brave' admission these days. But anyway, her schtick now is successful commercially, so what do I know?

Her voice on the Sound of Music stuff IS very nice. Right in there w. Streisand's early stuff, Julie Andrews, Marni Nixon. Impressive to hear her do something 'straight' . Sorry-- hadn't actually listened to the clip when I just answered before.

It could work - tunes from the Sound of Music, South Pacific, Oklahoma, etc.

Next wave. . .
