I love them, although it's mostly about the first two for me. Especially that first one is a science fiction/horror masterpiece for me.

Yes, I'd really just rather stick with the 1979 original, with its enigmatic ending. The others are, in my opinion, all sound, fury, blood, gore, and guts.

Yes, but they easily out-sound, fury, blood, gore, and guts the competition. Partly because Sigourney Weaver makes for a likable heroine and partly because the alien or aliens are the ultimate nightmarish monster/alien creations. The alien from the alien movies makes Frankenstein and Godzilla look like sissies. Still, the first one is the masterpiece here. It has more of a dark thriller vibe about it whereas the second one is more of a straight 'action movie', although a better one than the genre usually produces. For the new one I hear that they are going to ignore parts three and four and pick up where part two left off.

What was done in the original, and I think that is indeed a testament to the actors involved, Sigourney in particular, is that you had characters who weren't just bumped off in a lot of graphically gory ways by the aliens. In any case, I think special effects oftentimes swamp everything for the sake of spectacle. And besides, the ambiguous ending of ALIEN has some of the feel of other films that have equally ambiguous endings, Hitchcock's THE BIRDS, and Sam Peckinpah's STRAW DOGS, for example.

Alien 1 is one of my very fave sci-fi films of all times (admittedly not my fave film genre overall). The others just ok.

I would also say that, besides a very solid cast and a very claustrophobic setting (the deep-space freighter Nostromo), there are two other reasons that the 1979 original works. One is that Ridley Scott was the director. The other was that sci-fi buff Dan O'Bannon was the one that wrote the screenplay in a way that was witty, intelligent, and unsettling all at once. Those are the reasons that I'm just satisfied with the concept as it originally was.
