Interesting, though making $50 million from a film woulda been a HUGE amount before the 'techno' era took over, c1980 or so. . . Several of these are 'small budget' or relatively small budget films anyway.

Not really surprising, though I would have thought that Marty and It Happened One Night were huge hits..

Not really surprising, though I would have thought that Marty and It Happened One Night were huge hits.. Well, I suppose they were hits compared to most other movies but not when compared to other best picture winners. It's all relative. It's like that moronic article about the new Madonna album. Entering the charts at number two is suposed to be disappointing, but if Linda Ronstadt would have entered the charts at number two in the 90's or 2000's we would have been dancing in the Streets.

In the case of MARTY, since it wasn't an especially expensive film to make, it did become a significant box office hit, then proceeded to garner its Oscars. And in those days, films weren't nearly as expensive to make as they would be in really just a few short years.

Even up until about 1960, a film that netted a couple million dollars was generally considered a pretty solid 'hit.' Though that probably less true even then for 'spectacular' ones, which of course cost more. Studios also made a lot more films, including B ones, serials & such.
