He was really a fine character actor for a long time. Besides Fagin, also good as somewhat similar Uriah Heep in TV adapt. of David Copperfield, & other stuff of course.

He often made mediocre movies enjoyable because of his presence.

Quote by jhar26:
He did do a good villain turn in the 1974 James Bond film THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, as well as Artemidorus in the 1970 film version of Shakespeare's JULIUS CAESAR (alongside Charlton Heston and Sir John Gielgud); the Nazi commandant Wolfgang von Kleinschmidt in Spielberg's "1941", and a deep-sea diver in AIRPORT '77.
But he does share something in common with actors like Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price, and Peter Cushing, in that while the horror genre is where he established himself, it was also in some ways a limiting factor in his career. If he wasn't doing horror film roles, he was often doing villainous turns. This isn't a criticism of his career, just a modest observation of how being typecast in one genre or one kind of role can be both a blessing and a burden.
