Sorry to read of that. He definitely wrote many noteworthy plays at a time when this 'genre' was becoming somewhat outmoded, or undervalued anyway. His best works are a fine mix of comedy/pathos, & his characters often memorable too. RIP.

Simon certainly should be held up as one of the great playwrights in American history, even if he was wildly different from, say, Edward Albee or Eugene O'Neill. I can't think off the top of my head of anyone of that stature working in that field today, though they likely exist.

I can't think of another American comic playwright at that level. David Mamet perhaps in general playwright field, though he's older generation by now too. Unfortunately, not a 'bright' time for American plays/theater of that kind. Hopefully, someone will emerge, though with all the media 'platforms' now, likely working on films/TV. A loss that though, as I'm a fan of live theater.

Yes, it does seem that the actual Stage is being replaced by "Virtual Reality" (grumble, grumble).
