I find it impossible to take the HOF seriously by any stretch of the imagination. Even so, here's some of my thoughts as we go down the list of nominees in alphabetical order.
MARY J BLIGE: Contemporary r&b/neo-soul artist. Not bad, but she doesn't move me like, say, Erykah Badu does. I would say that she won't get in.
KATE BUSH: A near genius who artistically is the most talented by a huge margin of this entire bunch. But when Europeans hear the name Bush we think about Kate while Americans think about George. She should get, but she won't (unfortunately).
DEVO: American New Wave fruitcake act that I never got. But I'm told that the're important, so perhaps.
FELA KUTI: The king of afrobeat music. Or afro jazz-fusion if you will. Should get in, but won't because he's from Nigeria, is very political and doesn't sell a truckload of records in the US.
FOO FIGHTERS: The follow-up band to Nirvana. Will probably get in. If not now than definitely in the future. I have no opinion on whether they should or shouldn't because I don't know their music well enough to have an informed opinion about it.
THE GO-GO'S: I wouldn't mind if they got in. They are fun and made some excellent sunshine pop/rock. I think they have an excellent chance of getting in.
IRON MAIDEN: THE heavy metal band from the 1980's and leaders of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. Had a string of critically acclaimed albums, sold truckloads of albums, concert tickets and t-shirts. Should be a no brainer. But since the rock and roll hall of fame doesn't seem to like rock and roll all that much I doubt that they will make it.
JAY-Z: His other half Beyonce inducting him would make for what must pass for "great television," so it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he would get in. If not now than in the next couple of years. Whether he should or shouldn't? Don't ask me. I hate rap and am therefore not qualified to judge how he matches up with other artists in the genre.
CHAKA KHAN: Definitely. She would have my vote. In fact she should already have been in ages ago as a member of Rufus.
CAROLE KING: Has already been inducted as one half of the songwriting duo Goffin & King. But she will probably be inducted again on the basis of her Tapestry album. While she never again reached the same heights commercially or artistically, it's nevertheless been an impressive career.
LL COOL J: I know the name. I know that he raps. Don't ask me.
THE NEW YORK DOLLS: They played the garage, proto-punk type of rock that the Hall likes, so they have a shot. On the other hand, you can't let them be inducted by Bruce Springsteen or Paul McCartney, so I don't know.
RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE: Rap Metal act from the 90's. I know about them, but never checked them out. So - no opinion.
TODD RUNDGREN: Important artist and producer, but "nobody" knows him and he's thus bad for television ratings. Won't get in although he's arguably deserving.
TINA TURNER: Has already been inducted as one half of Ike & Tina Turner. Artistically her solo career was not as impressive as her work with Ike (but not bad either) although her sales figures went through the roof and she was a major concert attraction. But the Hall can drag Beyonce onto the stage to induct her and do a rendition of Proud Mary, which is good for the ratings of their television show, so she stands an excellent chance to be inducted imo.
DIONNE WARWICK: Hard to think of someone who's further removed from rock and roll than Dionne Warwick, but she's good at what she does. I'm surprised that she isn't in already actually. I wouldn't mind if she made it this time.
