The British pop group Edison Lighthouse is in this week's Pop Music Hits Spotlight with their single U.S. hit, but one that remains a big one (more recently because of TikTok) unto this day.
LOVE GOES (WHERE MY ROSEMARY GOES) (Edison Lighthouse; Bell; 1970)—While extended studio FM rock radio was becoming the big thing as the 1960’s came to an end and the 1970’s began, there was nevertheless still room for Top 40 AM radio as well. One such example of this was in the one-hit (at least in the U.S.) English studio band Edison Lighthouse, which was formed in 1969 and named for the Eddystone Lighthouse off of the coast of Devon. The most notable member of this pop-rock outfit was Tony Burrows, who became one of the most frequently heard British studio vocalists in history, starting with this band’s biggest hit, “Love Goes (Where My Rosemary Goes)”. Recorded in November 1969 and released on the Bell label the following January, the song, written by Tony Macaulay and Barry Mason (the latter known for being a prolific songwriter for, among others, Engelbert Humperdinck and Tom Jones). It was an instant #1 hit in the group’s native England in the first week of February 1970; and while it didn’t match that on the other side of the Atlantic, it was nevertheless a sizeable U.S. hit as well, peaking at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks (March 28th through April 4th). Burrows, beyond this hit, also appeared on three other big hits of 1970: the White Plains hit “My Baby Loves Lovin’”; the Pipkins’ “Gimme Dat Ding”; and “United We Stand” by The Brotherhood of Man; each of these three songs were large scale hits in both England and America. Burrows also appeared as the lead vocalist on the English pop group First Class’ 1974 hit “Beach Baby”. In the meantime, “Love Grows”, following decades of being an AM oldies favorite in America, returned to big prominence after it had suddenly become ultra-popular on the TikTok app at the end of 2021 and the start of 2022.
