Chris Brubeck, the son of legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, is in this week's Classical Works Spotlight with a guitar concerto he wrote for the great American classical guitarist Sharon Isbin.
Chris Brubeck: AFFINITY (CONCERTO FOR GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA)
Although he himself may not be a known composer, Chris Brubeck has the composing and performance genes locked in him, as he is the son of legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. Born in Los Angeles in 1951, he was ten years old when his father had a massive pop hit in 1961 with “Take Five”. By the 1970’s, he was alternating between working with cult rock bands in Los Angeles and inside his family with his father and his brothers Darius, Dan, and Matthew. Over the next three decadesm into the new millennium, Chris has been active in the fields of composition of modern classical works. One of these was his 2015 work “Affinity”, essentially a single-movement concerto for guitar and orchestra that he composed specifically for the legendary American classical guitarist Sharon Isbin. The concerto, per Chris’ notes, contains elements of modern jazz, Ragtime, the Renaissance era, and finally a mystical Middle Eastern passage to conclude the work. There was, in Ms. Isbin’s words, more than enough “guitaristic” passages for her to give “Affinity” its world premiere in 2017 with conductor Elizabeth Schulze and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and then have it recorded on an album by Ms. Isbin that contains other works for solo guitar, as well as an arrangement of Antonio Lauro’s “Waltz No. 3” pairing Ms. Isbin with fellow guitarist Colin Davin.
Guitar: SHARON ISBIN
Maryland Symphony Orchestra/ELIZABETH SCHULZE (Zoho)
Included (Affinity):
Leo Brouwer: EL DACAMERON NEGRO
Antonio Lauro: WALTZ NO. 3 (NATALIA) (Arranged by COLIN DAVIN) (Second Guitar: COLIN DAVIN)
Richard Danielpour: OF LOVE AND LONGING (Soprano: ISABEL LEONARD)
