Beginning next weekend (January 6, 2024), I will be starting a new segment of reviewing full-length classical recordings, starting with Mozart's Requiem, in a 1982 recording by the Dresden State Orchestra under the direction of Peter Schreier.
In lieu of that, and given that we have reached the end of 2023, here are what I think are works appropriate to listen to to look back on 2023, and to look forward to in 2024. I will only outline the works themselves, not any specific recordings.
Beethoven: SYMPHONY NO. 9 (CHORAL) Mahler: SYMPHONY NO. 2 (RESURRECTION) Aaron Copland: FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MAN Aaron Copland: SYMPHONY NO. 3 Samuel Barber: ADAGIO FOR STRINGS Schubert: SYMPHONY NO. 9 (GREAT) Mozart: AVE VERUM CORPUS Haydn: MASS NO. 14 (HARMONIEMESSE) William Grant Still: SYMPHONY NO. 1 (AFRO-AMERICAN) Vaughan-Williams: FANTASIA ON A THEME OF THOMAS TALLIS
Happy New Year 2024.
