With respect to the game itself, if I were a betting man, I'd pick the Colts to win, but in a close game (margin no greater than 7 points).
As for Prince or Stevie, I'd go with Stevie, because I'm more fond of her Welsh Witch persona. I find Prince way too sexually suggestive (and dull).

ERIK..IT'S MANDATORY TO BE A BEARS FAN THIS WEEK .. BUT, AFTER HAVING WATCHED THE 85 BEARS AND THE MONSTERS OF THE MIDWAY... I FEEL .. EH.. I THINK IT WILL BE CLOSE... AGAIN, I SAY REX (QB)IS UNPREDICTABLE.. THERE IS ENERGY IN DA BEARS.. NOTHING LIKE DA BEARS OF IRON MIKE. CREDIT TO BOTH COACHES.. TO ME, THEY ARE SO LOW KEYED AND WELL MANNERED.. I AM IMPRESSED WITH THEIR COACHING STYLE.. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IRON MIKE TO GET TO THE SUPERBOWL.. THE FACT THAT COACH COLT AND COACH LOVIE ARE GOOD FRIENDS AND HAVE A LONG HISTORY PLAYS OUT NICELY.. KEEPING THE GAME AS IS SHOULD BE.. RESPECTABLE.. I KNOW COACH COLT ..ATTRIBUTED HIS INFLUENCES TO THE PITTSBURG STEELERS COACH CIRCA 1975.. THAT DOMINATED THE FIELD BACK THEN.. CHUCK NOLL.. I THINK. AS FOR YOU ENTERTAINMENT FACTOR.. YOU KNOW I AGREE WITH THE STEVIE FACTOR.. I SAY "STANDBACK" & "ROCK & ROLL".. I THINK SHE WILL DO THE ZEP COVER !! PRINCE.. DULL...NOT DULL IMO.. CLARIY: NOT DULL ONSTAGE.. OFFSTAGE. .. VERY INTENSE, MOODY FEEL... EITHER WAY, THE UNDER 30 CROWD WILL BE OUT IN FORCE... THOSE OF US... EVEN THE KIDS ( 5-10) REMEMBER THE FRIDGE, PEYTON... PUNKY QB.. AND NOTHING HAS BEEN AS GOOD FOR CHICAGO SINCE.. EVEN THE WHITE SOX WIN.. THAT DIVIDED THE CITY...

Colts vs Bears is the game? Where are they from? I might tape it and watch Monday night... of course the game starts around Midnight European time...
There was a time when a Dutch tv station had a game every sunday. Watched it regular then. But they stopped and now there's almost no American Football on tv anymore. I like the game for it's tactics, any comparing to a physical game is meaningless as it's totally different.

They used to show a match every week or so on "Canal +", maybe they still do on "Prime", I don't know. I agree that comparisons between American football and Rugby don't make any sense, it's the same thing as comparing basketball to korfbal or tennis to badmington. Gaston

I agree with Noam Chomsky that big commercial sports and the loyalty that it incites is another way that Americans stay foggy and ignorant about what's going on in the world.
Frankly, who cares who wins?
I admire the skills and discipline of athletes. I'll say that much.
However, as I will be doing a lot of reading and writing this weekend (finally getting the habit back! Yay!), I won't have time for this bizarre social phenomenon. I'll sip a glass of tap water for everyone who's engaged in it.
I would like to take a break for the Stevie show, however. How will I know when it starts if I'm not watching the game? Oh, the conundrum!

I don't see what one thing has got to do with the other. One could say the same thing about people with a passion for movies, music, reading novels or whatever. Why should kicking a football around be any more bizarre than someone appearing on the silver screen pretending to be someone else? Sports is a form of entertainment and in the end it all comes down to personal preference as to which form of entertainment one prefers. Gaston

Hi Gaston, I never heard of "Korbal", till I read your post. Care to make a few comments about it! Marty I don't know that much about Korfbal (don't know the English name) myself, but it's also a sport where participants have to throw the ball through a basket to score. Each team is made up of (I think) six males and six females who pass the ball to each other, but they don't bounce the ball like they do in basketball. Also, you have a defensive and an offensive zone and players are not allowed to get out of the zone the're supposed to be playing in. Arjan probably knows more since Holland are the best in the world in this game. Belgium are among the best also though. Gaston

Just expressing my, as usual, atypical point of view. It's food for thought. But to answer your question, the difference is, books, movies, and music have the potential to expand one's mind. I admit that some of the stuff I listen to is not much more expansive than football, but it does allow me to feel certain emotions which does have the potential to be expansive in my creative life. If you read what I wrote carefully, you will realize that the entertainment value was not what I was critiquing. It was the team loyalty aspect of sports in general. I know it's universal. And I blame imperial Rome for the whole mess. Andrew

Arjan probably knows more since Holland are the best in the world in this game. Belgium are among the best also though. Gaston Actually, the English name for Korfbal is.... *drumroll*... Korfball! It's played by 4 males and 4 females per team, divided into 2 halfs of the field. The defence is not allowed to enter the attackers half and vice versa. The ball of course can be played from one half to the other. The object is to get the ball through the basket, with the main difference with basketball is that the basket is much higher, has no backboard and the field is around the basket (so you can walk before, aside and behind it!). Despite (or because?) the mixed gender teams, physical contact is forbidden. I actually hated the sport when having to do it at school. It was just above gymnastics but way below football (soccer) and volleyball.

And I blame imperial Rome for the whole mess. Andrew Well, should EVERYTHING we love have the potential to expand one's mind? Besides, sports ain't necessarily empty headed anyway. Tactics are a major factor and a smart team (or athlete) can often beat a physically superior one. Watching sports is also more enjoyable if one is a real follower of the sport in question and one has a better understanding of the nuances of the game. A comparison between sports and the goings on in the Rome of old are a bit far fetched IMO, although it's become almost a cliché used by those that don't like competitive sports. The history of sports precedes those days by thousands of years and I bet that even the first human beings on the planet held competitions to see who could throw a stone further than anyone else or who could run faster. Nothing wrong with that and the furthest thing from being thrown to the lions. As for team loyalty, well, personally I prefer sports of man against man (or woman against woman) over team sports, but I see no harm in wanting "your team" to do well. No need to take it all so seriously IMO. Gaston

>>Colts vs Bears is the game? Where are they from?<,
**They're from Indianapolis (Colts) and Chicago (Bears). Colts were formerly in Baltimore for many years. Indy and Chi. are only about 200 miles aprt (close in US terms!).
As for sports not expanding the mind-- well, lots of things, including music can be just diversionary too & sports are more complicated once you get into it. The intrusiveness/'over popularity' of sports predates ancient Rome definitely-- a number of Greek city states went bankrupt trying to finance & then support their star Olympic athetes. They were kinda like today-- 'pop' stars & sports stars wrapped up together. Better sports than war IMO-- which seems to be the 'popular' alternative. I admit I'm more of an individual sports fan personally-- I like tennis the most I guess, also figure skating at times (ok-- mainly the women ;D, 'cept the music is usually not that interesting-- and/or sound horrible). Dallas & Green Bay are in same 'conference.' They woulda met in earlier playoffs-- essentially quarter or semi-finals. There are two conferences-- winners of each meet in Super Bowl. Last year I think SB was between Seattle and Pittsburgh-- can't recall before that. Ed

Must have been the semi's then - I think Dallas went through to the Superbowl with either a dutch Quarterback or a Quarterback who had played for Amsterdam Admirals. Must have been around 2000, 2001?

I don't know who played for Amsterdam Admirals. Looked it up: last Dallas appearance in SB was in '96 (they beat Pittsburgh). Last Green Bay was in '98 (they lost to Denver). For superbowl, www.superbowl.com. If interested, you can probably find answer there someplace. Ed
